In last Blog we have a basic idea of
Algebraic Expression (polynomial) mean.
Today we are going to learn Addition
of Algebraic Expression.
But,
what is mean by like term?
Þ Like terms are terms whose variable
& their exponents are the same.
Adding Polynomials:
·
Place the like terms together.
·
Add the coefficients of like terms & put the variable then.
Horizontal Method of Adding:
Vertical Method of Adding:
We can add several polynomials at a time.
Note:
·
Here, beauty of Algebra is that, the term (sign, coefficient
& variable with exponents can be rearranged wherever necessary)
·
Hence, horizontal method is more convenient than vertical method
so mostly horizontal method is used.
Subtraction of Expressions (Polynomials)
It is same as adding of Expression only thing is that the sign of second polynomial (polynomial to be subtracted) are reversed. For details please see the example.
Why the sign of subtracting expression been changed?
It
is same as subtracting integer from another is to add its opposite integer to
the other.
Ex.
18 – 7 = 18 + (-7) = 11
9x – 4x = 9x + (-4x) = [9 + (-4)]x = 5x

Subtract the second expression from the first
(4xy -9z) ; (3xy-16z)
(5x + 4y +7z) ; (x + 2y + 3z)
(14x2 + 8xy
+ 3y2) ; (26x2 - 8xy - 17y2)
(6x2 + 7xy +
16y2) ; (16x2 – 17xy)
5 (4x +16z) ; (19y – 14z
+ 16x)
