Order of Operations – BODMAS/PEMDAS

Order of Operations – BODMAS/PEMDAS

Welcome friends! Today we are going to learn about Order of Operation.

But, the Question is ….

“What is operation in Mathematics?”

Ans: In Mathematics things like add, subtract, Multiply, Divide, Squaring, Square roots, etc. are operations. If it isn’t a number or variable, it is probably an operation in statements.

Another Question is …..

What is the Order of Operation?

Ans: To get answer first we will see how to solve this in different ways….

But, why only 3rd way is correct and rest two are wrong.

Because….

In 1st and 2nd way the accepted Order of Operation is not followed.

A long-long year ago, people decided to follow a unique order of operations so, the answer will never varies.

         The order is as follows:

This is all called as BODMAS!

B       Bracket first

O      Order (i.e. Power and square, square roots)

DM    Division and Multiplication (left to right)

AS     Addition and Subtraction (left to right)

Note:

For orders, in Canada “Exponent” is used so, they use to call BEDMAS. In US they say “Parenthesis” instead of Bracket, so it is “PEMDAS”.

Some Examples:

1)         Solve (5 + 7) x 9

       =12 x 9    ……. (Adding 5 + 7 = 12)

       = 108       ……. (Multiply 12 x 9 = 108)

2)         Solve : 7 x 5 – 3 + 25 / 5 x 7

  = 7 x 5 – 3 + 5 x 7     ……. (Divide 25/5 = 5)

  = 35 – 3 + 35 ……. (Multiply 7x5=35 & 5x7=35)

  = 35 + 35 – 3 …….. (Rearranging)

  = 70 – 3         …….. (Adding 35 + 35 = 70)

  = 67              ……… (Subtracting 70-3=67)

3)         Solve: 12 x 3 + 4 – 12

= 36 + 4 – 12   ……. (Multiplying 12 x 3 = 36)

= 40 -12           ……. (Adding 36 + 4 = 40)

= 19                 ……. (Subtracting 40-12=19)

Examples for Practice

1)         7 x 5 / 7 +3 -2

2)         15 -10 + 4 + 2

3)         (16/4 x 4) + 8 – 2

4)         (12 – 3 + 2) x 3

5)         7 x ( 5 + 33)/ 2
